Tell Me About the Retreat Theme
Equipped for CALM:
Self-Control through Biblical Discernment and Grace in Action
God’s word is overflowing with references to self-control. This mastery of our divided hearts, emotions, and actions is the mark of a mature Christian and obtained only through the power of the Holy Spirit. No one will disagree with that. We’d love it if everyone had more of it. But what do we expect of ourselves on a Tuesday with altered schedules, unmet expectations, bumps in the road, and the rest of the chaos and conflict not part of our plan? With our time together, we’ll look at how to think about and how to pursue biblical self-control in the face of God ordained changes, tests, and trials and how to love others through it all.
Tell Me About the Retreat Speaker
Kerry Anderson is originally from Colorado Springs, CO and holds a degree in English from UCLA. She’s been married to Scotty (WRPC Pastor to Family Ministry) for 30 years; they have been at WRPC since 2001. Scotty & Kerry have three children and two bonus children by marriage. Their son and his wife live in Charlotte, where he serves on staff at Christ Covenant Presbyterian Church. Their daughter and son-in-law live in Charleston, SC, and their youngest daughter, Grace, is in 11th grade.
Kerry loves good coffee, reading, and being active (especially outside in the mountains!), all things 80’s pop culture, and usually is found with one AirPod in, listening to a podcast or audiobook. She loves her local church and putting her energy into teaching youth and ladies, ministering to women, and helping run a middle school summer camp. She also writes occasionally for the PCA women’s blog, enCourage, and speaks at women’s conferences. She is also the host of the podcast, Mothers & Sisters.
Tell Me About the Facility
Built in 1938, Gaines Lodge at Table Rock State Park is a CCC-era facility with a commanding view of Table Rock Mountain, a large upstairs lodge room with exposed beams, hardwood floors, and two fireplaces. The lower level includes the charming 72-seat dining room and catering kitchen. There is also ample seating on both the upper and lower balconies, both of which overlook Pinnacle Lake with Table Rock tower above in the background. The Lodge has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1989. It underwent a significant restoration project in 2005, which aimed to preserve its historic features and enhance its facilities for visitors. This project was part of ongoing efforts to maintain the lodge’s charm and functionality within the beautiful natural setting of the park. In 2019, the building was renamed to Gaines Lodge as a tribute to the retired and highly accomplished director of the South Carolina State Park Service, Phil Gaines, after 36 years of service.
The Lodge is located at 233 Table Rock State Park Road in Pickens. You will enter Table Rock State Park from the WEST GATE Entrance. The address for West Gate is 1025 Table Rock State Park Road, Pickens, SC. Then, follow the main road through the park for approximately 2 miles before arriving at the Lodge on your right.
Every driver will need to show a GAINES LODGE PARKING PERMIT (provided by WIC Retreat Committee after registration) to avoid any additional fees upon entering the park. This parking permit MUST BE DISPLAYED AT ALL TIMES while on park property.
Tell me What to Expect
Expect hours of learning, worshipping, and connecting on a deeper with the Ladies of SPC. Expect to come away from the day with your soul refreshed and your heart renewed. Expect to be inspired by the natural beauty of the South Carolina foothills and the rustic charm of a historic lodge – feeling a million miles away from the stresses of work and home- all less than an hour away from SPC. Expect two lovely meals (lunch and dinner) provided by our favorite caterers, Jenn & Ryan of Roots to Rise. Bring your Bible, and expect to learn something new! Expect to strengthen dear existing friendships, and to make a new friend or two.
For those who like to pack in the fun, extra-curricular activities may be available (some with additional charges) either in the morning before the retreat or during the afternoon break. For those who prefer to relax, there will be plenty of time to kick back and enjoy the warmth & beauty from the Lodge.
No childcare provided. Please feel free to organize your own carpool, if desired.
Tell Me About the Extra-Curricular Offerings
Depending on availability and interest, the following extra-curricular activities may be offered (some may require additional fees):
- Early Morning hike
- Mid-day Nature Walk
- Canoe and Kayak rentals
- Tour of Table Rock Tea Company
- Hagood Mill
If you are interested in participating in *any* of the extra-curricular activities, please indicate your interest on the registration form. An indication of interest is *not* a commitment. A member of the WIC Retreat Committee will follow up with all who indicate interest with more details, and to help coordinate the facilitation of various groups for various activities, if enough interest exists.
What if I Still Have Questions?
For questions about any extra-curricular offerings, please contact Christy Guisti.
For all other questions about the WIC Spring Retreat, please contact Gerilyn McGaughran.
