Session | Ruling Elder
Committee | Evangelism Chairman
Emil Heller Henning III is the son of a Ruling Elder in the old northern United Presbyterian Church, in which he was baptized and confirmed as a member at age 12, although he dates his conversion to Christ much later when, at age 30, he read the 47th chapter of Isaiah and applied its condemnation of Babylon to his own life. Shortly thereafter, Emil came to Greenville and attended two area mainline churches until he saw an ad for SPC in the newspaper. He had never heard of the “Reformed faith,” but he still remembers his amazement on his first Sunday at Second to hear Rev. Paul Settle preach on the Abrahamic covenant, and after that he never visited another church. After becoming a member in 1983, he immediately joined the choir and Westminster S.S. Class, and then was elected to three terms on the Diaconate, operating for many of those years a Friday afternoon ministry to poor families near the church.
Since being elected as a Ruling Elder, Emil has served primarily on the Worship and Music Committee. Emil is single, and has been self-employed as an architect since 2002, supplemented by other part-time employment. One Bible verse he has found especially meaningful is, “Delight yourself also in the LORD, and He shall give you the desires of your heart” (Ps.
34:4). Space doesn’t allow a proper account of those blessings, but as good and numerous as they have been, none is greater than the delightfulness of the Lord Himself.
