Melton “Mel” Duncan, Sr. was born into the covenant family of the Second Presbyterian Church and has spent his entire life within its bounds. He doesn’t remember a day where he didn’t know the gospel story and have belief in Jesus Christ–trusting in Him alone as the one who made particular atonement for his sins. Having been taught by his parents in the Presbyterian faith, strengthened by his older brothers in his walk with the Lord, and being blessed by the ministries of his boyhood pastors Dr. Gordon Reed and Dr. Paul Settle he made a public profession of faith before the Elders and Congregation in November of 1977 at which time he recited his favorite bible verses “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
Mel grew up in Greenville, attending local schools and then Clemson. He has a passion for history, loves reading, and following college sports. He is particularly fond of J. R. R Tolkien’s legendarium. In 2001 he married Lynda Robbins and the Lord has blessed them with three covenant children: Ford, Frances, and Mary Elizabeth.
Mel has been an active churchman, serving within Second Church as a Sunday School Teacher, Youth Basketball Coach, Deacon, and an Elder since 2002. He has participated in leadership committees for Administration, Christian Education, Fellowship, Long Range Planning, Media, and the Centennial celebration of SPC. In Calvary Presbytery he has been Moderator in 2007 and 2012 and is Chairman of the SC Joint Committee for RUF. For the General Assembly, he has served as a Commissioner each year since 2003, and as a member of its Overtures and Resolution of Thanks Committees as well as the Historical Archives Commission and RUF Permanent Committee. Since 2010, Mel has been on staff as the Church Administrator at SPC.
