Gordon Kenworthy Reed
A graduate of Columbia Theological Seminary installed as the ninth Senior Minister of Second Presbyterian Church. During his ministry the church prospered and was revitalized. The Session first expressed formal concern over the theological liberalism within the old Southern Presbyterian Church. He participated in the early PCA organizational meetings and served as a founding trustee for the denomination.
1973 Congregational Meeting
In July 1973 the Second Presbyterian Congregation debated joining the Continuing Presbyterian Church movement and moving its affiliation into the new church. See the Resolution it approved here. Listen to the meeting here.

J. Ligon Duncan, Jr.
A son of the old Southern Presbyterian Church, he was a PCA Founding Father and most of its early General Assemblies. He served on the PCA“Views of Offices” Study Committee and after the first General Assembly gathered all the founders’ signatures and published the Message to All Churches.
C. Stuart Patterson
Second’s longest serving officer, was a PCA Founding Father and attended most of its early General Assemblies. He served on the PCA Creation Study Committee and was a stalwart defender of biblical creation.
The formation of Calvary Presbytery
Calvary Presbytery was formed in January 1974 and is a regional body of congregations within the South Carolina Upcountry. We are members of the Presbyterian Church in America, the largest Bible Believing Presbyterian denomination in the United States. Dr. Gordon K. Reed preached the first sermon before Presbytery from I Peter 2:1-10 “What The Church Is For.”

Paul Settle moderates 8th General Assembly
a graduate of Columbia Theological Seminary installed as the tenth Senior Minister of Second Presbyterian Church. During his ministry the church prospered. He was a PCA Founding Father, served as a leader of Presbyterian Churchmen United and was the first coordinator for Christian education for the new denomination. During his years at Second the church prospered and in 1976 hosted the sixth PCA General Assembly.
J. Ligon Duncan III moderates the 32nd General Assembly
A covenant child of the church onetime Senior Minister of FPC Jackson and later Chancellor/CEO of Reformed Theological Seminary and the John E. Richards Professor of Systematic and Historical Theology. He moderated the Pittsburgh PCA General Assembly.
40th General Assembly in Greenville
Second Presbyterian Church along with Calvary Presbytery hosts the 40th General Assembly in Greenville, SC – the Duncan family republishes the Message to All Churches. Shirley Duncan, Calvary Presbytery’s First WIC President was honored as a “founding mother of the PCA.”
